Chinese Reconnaissance Drones Conduct Operations Near Okinawa
Increased aerial activity prompts Japan to respond
The WZ-7 Xianglong, a new heavy reconnaissance drone developed by China, is reportedly undertaking active reconnaissance flights near Japan's Okinawa. A Japanese press release dated November 2 indicates that on October 31, Chinese drones made two crossings through the Miyako Strait, which connects the East China Sea to the Pacific Ocean, prompting Japan to scramble fighter jets.
The WZ-7 features a significant wingspan of approximately 25 meters and boasts an operational range of up to 7,000 kilometers, with a service ceiling around 18 kilometers. Its distinctive design incorporates a joined-wing configuration, optimized for prolonged high-altitude flights.
Primarily, the WZ-7 is intended for maritime surveillance and tracking naval formations, particularly monitoring the movements of U.S. and Japanese fleets. Additionally, it is presumed that the drone is capable of relaying target data for China's anti-ship cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.
