Swiss Voters Reject Stricter Neutrality, Maintaining Sanctions on Russia

In a recent referendum, Swiss citizens voted against a proposal to harden the country's neutrality principle, which was endorsed by the Kremlin but opposed by the Swiss government. This decision reflects Switzerland's ongoing commitment to maintaining sanctions on Russia amidst the ongoing conflict.

Swiss voters decisively rejected a proposal to adopt stricter rules on neutrality, which would have required Switzerland to limit cooperation with NATO and retract sanctions against Russia, according to Politico Europe and The Guardian.

The rejection means Switzerland will maintain its current stance on neutrality and continue its sanctions against Russia, avoiding a shift towards a more formalized neutrality doctrine. The motion was heavily promoted by the far-right Swiss People’s party (SVP) but ultimately failed to gain traction among the electorate.

This outcome underscores Switzerland's commitment to its traditional role as a neutral mediator, allowing it to continue participating in international dialogue without severing ties with NATO or siding directly in conflicts, thus preserving its strategic relationships.
